Faculty Architecture & the Built Environment

Since its foundation 110 years ago, the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment has built up a solid international reputation for training architects, urban planners and designers, as well as for its research portfolio and coaching of PhD candidates. With around 2600 students and 500 staff members, with around 230 FTEs devoted to academic positions, our faculty is one of the largest of Delft University of Technology and one of the most prestigious architecture and the built environment faculties globally. Traditionally, the faculty has prioritised high-quality training in design and research in the field of the built environment. Over 40 chairs cover a wide range of academic areas in design, process and technology, which together cover the entire field of the built environment. The faculty has a budget of around €38 million, of which approximately €7 million is sourced indirectly and from contracts with third parties.

The department of Management in the Built Environment (MBE) of this Faculty works towards a sustainable built environment where the interests of the end user and other stakeholders are key. MBE focuses on solutions for the development and management of buildings, portfolios and urban areas and the education to the next generation of managers in the built environment.

Design and Construction Management (DCM)

With grand societal challenges such as the need for sustainable development to address the environmental and ecological crisis and the provision of affordable and decent housing in the context of rapid urbanisation, the Architectural Engineering and Construction industry is facing higher performance demands for its products and services. To respond to these challenges, the Design and Construction Management (DCM) section is undertaking research and education around new ways of reconfiguring work processes in the production of the built environment to meet the goals of creating a circular economy that emphasises greater responsiveness, reliablity, quality and resource efficiency in the through-life delivery of built environment projects. The section is also developing capability in understanding and addressing the opportunities and challenges posed by digital innovation in the context of the fourth industrial revolution where there is greater connectivity between people and technologies, and where interactions between technologies can provide fresh insights into solving built environment and societal challenges.

The DCM section’s ambition to address social, environmental and technological change in producing future built environments is realised by engaging with four challenging themes. These include examining questions of (1) technological change and its impacts on ways of designing, constructing and managing built assets; (2) institutions, institutional work and institutional change; (3) how people cope with change, and (4) configurations of systems in producing the built environment.

Functie omschrijving

In this Tenure Track position, you will be part of the DCM team in pursuit of its mission: to develop useful academic concepts, tools and principles for the management of the design, construction, and maintenance of architectural (re)developments to meet the demand for a high performance, flexible, sustainable and circular built environment.

Your focus will be on the framing and application of digital innovation in the context of the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0) where longstanding challenges of process integration, life-cycle thinking, and project and information management across the value chain have the potential to be addressed by greater connectivity between people and technologies. You will have a good understanding of key and emerging technologies in the Industry 4.0 context, including (though not exhaustively) building information modelling (BIM), Big Data, Internet of Things, machine learning, smart manufacturing etc. While these technologies promise potentially fresh perspectives and new solutions, we view these emerging technological advancements from a sociotechnical perspective within the section of DCM. So, you will also have an appreciation for what these technologies mean for those involved and how these technologies are used (or not), as intended (or not). You will build your personal academic profile, recognized by the international academic community and communities of practice. To this end, you will:

  • publish in authoritative international journals, play a role in international conferences and networks, and collaborate with the professional community in developing applications of your academic finding

  • initiate and co-author proposals for research grants and funding, and

  • be responsible for particular courses, educational tasks and coordinating activities in teaching in both the BSc. and MSc. Programmes within the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment.

Functie eisen

Applicants should have a PhD degree obtained at an internationally recognised institution, with research skills in fields relevant to the AEC industry in general, and the management of digital innovation in designing, constructing and managing the built environment in particular. We are open to a broad range of fields including e.g. science and technology studies, engineering, data science, management and organisational studies. Applicants should also demonstrate an interest in the areas that the section is seeking to grow influence in (as described in the job description above), evidenced in the academic peer-reviewed publications. In addition, the applicant should have thorough knowledge of and clear ideas for expanding the field of design and construction management. Practical experience with managing AEC projects or processes will be highly valued, as well as experience in teaching academic courses and supervising graduation research projects. The applicant should also be able to show management and administrative skills required for the position, and demonstrated competence in written and spoken English, and the willingness to learn Dutch.

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

A tenure-track position is offered for six years. Based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment, a decision will be made by the fifth year on whether to offer you a permanent faculty position. We expect that the candidate has the potential to grow towards an Associate Professor and/or Full Professor role in the future.
