Our Drivers Apprenticeship Programme

To get on the Drivers Apprenticeship at Aldi, you’ve got to be pretty good behind the wheel. (After all, you do need a full and clean UK Driving licence.) But we’re also just as interested in how driven you are. Because to really succeed, you have to grab every opportunity that comes your way. If you do, you’ll get some of the best people in the industry teaching you, and be well on your way to starting a career packed with rewarding moments. We have great camaraderie here, and give our people (yep, even our apprentices) bags of responsibility. But if you like that, then you’ll fit right in. And if all’s gone well, you’ll have a Category C + E licence at the end of the year, and be offered permanent role in Aldi.

A Training Programme Like No Other. A handy guide to what you can expect.

Day one

We don’t hang around at Aldi, and neither will you. So from your very first day, you’ll be straight to it, signing your contracts, meeting your Assessor and completing all the paperwork to enrol onto your qualification.

Helping hand

You’ll be assigned two Aldi mentors: a qualified driver who will teach you the technical side of the job, plus a Deputy or Section Leader, who’s there to answer any questions, look after your wellbeing, and ensure you’re on track.

Theory work

On top of your daily duties, you’ll also complete theory work. But don’t worry, while you might need to do a bit of revision later down the line, there’s very little you won’t have learnt from doing the job.

Assessor visit

Throughout the whole programme, your Assessor will pay you a visit every month. This is just to make sure that you’re on course with your programme, and on track to succeed.

Quarterly Review

Every three months, you’ll meet up with your Section Leader, Section Manager and Assessor. Again, this is just to make sure you’re on track and performing well.

Progress Review

On top of Assessor visits and Quarterly Reviews, you’ll also have Progress Reviews. Less formal than a Quarterly Review, they’re there to give you constant feedback about how you’re doing.

Warehouse start

At Aldi, people don’t just do their job and go home. We all muck in. So it’s important you understand life in the warehouse. From picking and packing, you’ll already be building a bigger picture.

Passenger

One day, you’ll be doing this by yourself. But, at the start, you’ll experience deliveries from the passenger seat. In most cases, it’ll be your mentor behind the wheel.

Transport yard

This’ll be your first experience driving. But before you go anywhere near a proper road, you’ll be out in the transport yard, getting used to the size of our Large Goods Vehicles (LGVs).

L-plates

Once you’re comfortable in our LGVs, you’ll be ready to hit the road for a couple weeks with your L-plates. Which, on a vehicle this size, is definitely a big, capital L.

Category C theory

Your Category C licence allows you to drive a vehicle over 3,500Kg. But you can’t do the practical without the theory. With help from your mentor and your Assessor, you’ll fit this revision around your daily tasks.

Intensive, but caring

We’re all about efficiency at Aldi. So rather than driving around for a year, you’ll go on an intensive driving course. All going well, you’ll take your Cat C test at the end of the week.

Time to deliver

Once you’ve got your Cat C licence, you’re ready to hit the road. Whether it’s on your own or with your mentor, you’ll be getting ever closer to your Cat C + E licence. This allows you to now have a trailer over 750kg. Result.

End of the road

If it’s all gone well, it’s time to get your Cat C + E licence. Just like your Cat C, you’ll have a theory and practical test to pass. Once you’ve passed everything, you’ll be offered a permanent driving position at Aldi.

Meet our Apprentices

Don’t just take our word for how great the Drivers Apprenticeship Programme is. Hear it from the guys behind the wheel – or, more specifically, current Driver Apprentice Ross. So whether you’re on a computer, phone, tablet or a fancy smart TV, take a moment and listen to what they have to say. We’ve even included a video of a Hiring Manager offering some great advice for any aspiring Aldi apprentice. Enjoy.

Benefits

We’re good at lots of things at Aldi, but we’re particularly good at looking after our people. Yes, you’ll need to work hard and we expect you to be committed (you know, turning up on time, working hard, that sort of thing) but we’ll make every effort to show our appreciation. That’s why we offer the following benefits:

Aldi is one of the most reputable retailers in the global business market today. Our goal has always been very simple: to provide great value and quality, using leaner and smarter business processes.
