Job description

Dates of internship: Tuesday 23rd June 2020 - Friday 4th September 2020

This is a unique opportunity to improve your technical and analytical skills on an 11-week paid summer internship; you will be working on live projects which will help keep the UK safe.

Technology is at the heart of everything we do at MI5. You’ll be working with – and learning from – experienced and pioneering technical teams, often on projects you won’t find anywhere else. By the end of your internship, you’ll have had a direct and rewarding impact on how we use technology to protect the UK from serious security threats. You’ll be based in one of four technical areas:

• Business Analysis

• Covert Technical Operations

• Software Engineering

Combining problem-solving skills with an aptitude for working with technology, you’ll be a confident communicator, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to different audiences. In some areas you’ll need basic coding skills, while in others your logical approach, interest in data flows, or knowledge of computer security or computer forensics will be more important. With basic computer skills, you’ll be comfortable working at a computer for long periods and handling a range of written, numerical, image-based and audio data.

You must be expecting to receive at least a 2:2 degree or equivalent in a technology or wider STEM-related subject by autumn 2021. You should also be available to start permanent employment in autumn 2021 if you wish to progress to our Technology Graduate Development Programme. For the duration of the internship you must be able to live in or commute to central London.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to apply, you must meet our residency criteria. You must be a born or naturalised British citizen and one of your parents must be a British citizen or have substantial ties to the UK. Candidates must normally have been a resident in the UK for 9 out of the last 10 years. This is particularly important if you were born outside the UK. You will nonetheless be considered if you have, for example, served overseas with HM Forces or in some other official capacity as a representative of Her Majesty’s Government, studied abroad, or lived overseas with your parents. You can apply at the age of 17 years and 6 months, if successful you will not be offered a start date prior to your 18th birthday. Discretion is vital. You should not discuss your application, other than with your partner or a close family member. Please note, you should only launch your application from within the UK. If you are based overseas, you should wait until you visit the UK to launch an application. Applying from outside the UK will impact on our ability to progress your application. Further information on our eligibility criteria can be found on the How to Applysection.
