The role of a Building Services Engineering team is not just about pipes and wires. We create comfortable and sustainable environments which delight their users and minimise environmental impact.

Our Building Services Technicians help us to illustrate mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems within these environments, utilising advanced 3D modelling technology such as Revit and Navisworks to ensure our clients' visions are accurately realised.

We are currently recruiting for a Trainee Technician to join our Building Services team in Bath; this is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic and technologically inquisitive candidate looking to start a career in the construction sector.

What is Building Services Engineering?

Why shouldn’t your project use high performance, low energy building systems? We at BuroHappold work as part of a global team, balance client’s aspirations with engineering (and often budgetary) constraints, to design high performance, low energy building systems. We use advanced modelling techniques to analyse the building envelope and its floor layouts. Our innovatively designed systems are then integrated into the building fabric, to create functional internal spaces and balanced, controllable conditions.

What would I do as a Trainee Technician?

As a Building Services Technician, you will help our Engineers design and represent complex mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems in 3D Building Information Models (BIM). Naturally, this is a varied role but day to day responsibilities will typically include:

  • Utilising the latest BIM (Building Information Modelling) technologies to develop engineering concepts into detailed 3D models and drawings;
  • Take responsibility for drawing/model issues and daily housekeeping in terms of both digital and hard copy project file storage.
  • Look to enhance traditional engineering workflows using computational and visual programming tools such as Dynamo/Grasshopper.
  • Ensure production and delivery of drawings aligns to agreed project programmes.
  • Making sure that drawing production follows company standards.
  • Reviewing drawings and 3D models to check compliance with design and ensuring good detailing practice is being undertaken.

What sort of projects would I work on?

The projects we deliver from the Bath office are diverse both in type and location, ranging from sports stadia in the UK, to airports in US and Asia, museums in the Middle East, and high end residential developments in London. You will have the opportunity to be involved in some of the most exciting built environment projects around the world, with recent examples including the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the Louvre Museum in Abu Dhabi, and the Factory Theatre in Manchester.

What further qualifications could I work towards?

We are keen to support your further learning and professional development. We will support Trainee Technicians to HNC/HND level qualification in a relevant course.

What are we looking for?

  • A keen interest and desire to learn about building design and technology;
  • Computer literate; passionate about technology and willing to learn new software;
  • AutoCAD, Revit, Programming or technical drawing experience an advantage;
  • Confident, proactive character, ability to take the lead in challenging situations with the confidence to question engineers regarding coordination of details;
  • At a minimum, good GCSE and A Level grades in Maths, Physics (or other relevant science subject) and English or BTEC Level 3 in Engineering/Building Services.

What is life really like?

  • “….It’s important to cooperate with people from different backgrounds, and BuroHappold is just the perfect place to do that and start a career. I am encouraged to share fresh ideas and my opinions. I am sure that in other companies, I wouldn’t have the chance to participate in such complex and advanced projects. Every day I’m given a new task, so I’m constantly busy and building on my knowledge. What has impressed me the most, is the professionalism of engineers working in BuroHappold, their huge knowledge in their specialist area of engineering and their willingness to share this knowledge. I love the opportunity to solve engineering problems and be part of the team working on huge projects.”
