The software department of the Application Engineering cluster is responsible for the software development in Combat Management and Radar- and Optical sensors for worldwide navies- and defense systems. The work is performed in multi-disciplinary agile teams with specialists in software/system/test engineering and functional design.
About the assignment
As software department the desire is recognized to deliver new features to market faster. For this, more loosely coupled systems and automated deployments are necessary. To realise loosely coupled systems a microservice architecture together with OS virtualization (Kubernetes) are realized. For the automated deployment of these new kind of systems the term “software defined” is encountered at different levels.
This assignment should answer for our department the question if the software department needs these software defined models and if so at what level?
Sub questions are:
e.g use an open standard like Tosca that is very broad (e.g. in the Cloudify product) or stick with a set of models specific for each level (e.g. Ansible or Terraform for Infrastructure, ONAP/OSM for networking and Helm charts for application deployment) or develop our own DSLs given the life-time of our systems
The research question can be summarized as:
is it possible to define a maturity model for an organization/product related to software defined everything
