Mechatronics Integration Engineer

Who is Lightyear?

Lightyear is an innovative and progressive scale-up with one mission; offering clean mobility for everyone, everywhere! Lightyear originates from the multiple world champion of the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge® Cruiser Class, Solar Team Eindhoven. With Stella and Stella Lux this team developed a solar powered, 4 person, road legal car. Lightyear was officially established in 2016 aiming to make this groundbreaking technology accessible to everyone! In 2016 it started with 5 visionaries. At the beginning of 2018 Lightyear had grown to 40 highly motivated people. Today, Lightyear consists of nearly 150 employees and keeps on growing. Lightyear has its own production facility and a new office to be delivered in the summer of 2019. This growth will continue in the coming years. For that reason we are looking for talent and experience to strengthen the company and contribute in achieving our mission!

What will you do as a Mechatronics Integration Engineer?

The In-Wheel Motor Team is responsible for a major part of the design and development of the drive train system of Lightyear One and will develop the majority of the in-wheel motor system in-house. In-wheel motors have strong advantages in terms of efficiency, mass, vehicle handling, packaging space compared to more conventional drive train architectures. It will become a fundamental system for Lightyear as an EV solar car platform. Ultimately, it will ensure independence, long range, reliability, minimum total cost of ownership over lifetime and all-road capabilities for the Lightyear One.

You will drive the electromagnetic design and development of the in-wheel motor based on first principle thinking.

Your job will focus but is not limited to:

  • Development of the in-wheel motor system together with a highly cross-functional engineering team with backgrounds in: mechanical-, thermal-, software-, control-, electrical engineering, test- and vehicle dynamics engineering
  • Integration of sensors, inverters, wiring and control units together with related software to let the system operate effective as a whole i.e. optimize the motor in the defined packaging space, definition of interfaces with mechanical components (rotor casing and stator mounting) and interfaces with thermal subsystems
  • Develop simple, cost-effective, manufacturable design solutions to make integration work within the in-wheel motor system and related test benches
  • Development of electrical machines and test benches of in-wheel motors and related systems
  • Support in the drafting, formulation and improvement of motor test methods and test operation instructions
