Your main responsibilities:

The Research Technician will be responsible for supporting the activities of the Heated Glasshouse Tomato breeding program in Bergschenhoek. As a Research Technician, you will have the opportunity to work with leading technology and talented cross functional scientists seeking to deliver the very best genetics for our vegetable seeds. This will involve overseeing and executing directives for the glasshouse operations team. You will support the management of the farm resources to achieve successful field trials and trial seed productions.

Activities can include, but are not limited to:

· Prepare, arrange and check all daily/seasonal operational breeding tasks to accomplish a successful tomato breeding program; including sowings, plantings, crossing blocks, breeding nurseries trials and marker assisted selection projects to incorporate genes for disease resistance and quality traits.

· Connect with the greenhouse supervisor to ensure enough labor is arranged, supervise the task to ensure the work is executed correctly and report back any observation back to the breeder/ research associate.

· Ensure all necessary equipment, safety and phytosanitary training is carried out as required by regulations and company policy.

· Effectively use computers and handheld data collection devices for record keeping, reports, spreadsheets, and field data.

Who you are

  • Bachelor in Plant Science or related field. Agricultural field experience required.
  • Knowledge of crop production and farming practices in vegetable agronomy
  • Effective team leadership qualities including excellent organizational, time management and motivational skills, accurate record keeping and attention to detail.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Comfortable with greenhouse work, sometimes under tough weather conditions.

Desired skills/experience:

  • Social skills and teamplayer.
  • Familiarity with breeding methodologies.
  • Knowledge on plant breeding and genetics.
