Team and role overview

Purpose

You will support the work of the Trade and Supply Chain Finance (“TSCF”) team in London. This includes the origination, execution and monitoring of TSCF transactions. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting and managing with research, initial assessment, credit analysis, due diligence, documenting, and monitoring as required, as well as liaising with other relevant transaction support teams (Environmental and Social, Business Integrity and Development Impact).

The TSCF team’s mandate (“Mandate”) is to support trade across Africa and South Asia. CDC provides financing or guarantees in order to fulfil TSCF’s mandate.

You will be capable of:

  • Analysing new TSCF opportunities against the Mandate and determining whether or not to pursue.
  • Coordinating, structuring writing and presenting credit papers and investment committee memos.
  • Completing discrete but thorough due diligence encompassing issuer, industry and economic analysis for a range of financial institutions and corporate Obligors.
  • Reviewing legal documentation, such as MRPA’s and trade documentation with the internal legal team.
  • Project managing and coordinating internal and external stake holders.
  • Updating internal trade capture and monitoring systems.
  • Drafting deal summaries and monitoring reports for internal and external distribution.

Responsibilities

Due diligence, credit analysis and deal execution:

  • Support senior members of the team and colleagues working on new deal proposals.
  • Manage, supervise and provide guidance to the Associate involved in the deal.
  • Responsible for analysis, including sector / market analysis; company / obligor analysis (including credit analysis financials and financial modelling); macro-economic analysis.
  • Responsible for drafting the relevant sections of the investment proposals.
  • Obtain input from the internal support teams as the investment proposal is drafted for final review.
  • Over time, you will gain experience in all aspects of investment assessment and due diligence, and will take responsibility for a broader range of due diligence and deal completion related work, to include leading the transaction with little supervision.

Portfolio management:

  • Supporting portfolio monitoring including month-end reporting, utilisation, covenant and limit monitoring
  • Update internal systems and any other system as required.
  • Act as liaison to other debt teams and Investment Committee (“IC”) members as needed to manage and review existing and new obligor risks.

Research and strategy:

  • Contribute to product/country and program strategies; collect market data and other ad-hoc analysis/research activities relevant to CDC’s TSCF business.
  • Keep up-to-date with deal-flow, deal management and portfolio monitoring databases for all transactions covered by the debt team.
  • Contribute and support the team with creating and maintaining marketing assets for the purpose of education, business development and conference attendance.

Product knowledge

  • All type of Trade Finance documentary credit, such as Letter of Credit, Bank Guarantee, Performance Bonds etc.
  • Structured Trade Finance, PO Financing etc.
  • Supply Chain Financing (i.e. Reverse Factoring), Factoring, Invoice Discounting/Financing, LC Discounting.
  • Fund Structuring and Funds Suppliers.
  • Value Chain Financing, Distributor Financing.
  • Direct Lending, SME Lending, Micro Lending.

New business:

  • Supporting the identification of new TSCF investments opportunities by developing/maintaining a network of relevant contacts, including with other development finance institutions, commercial banks, advisors, etc.

The candidate

Background

  • Extensive relevant experience within Trade Finance or Supply Chain Finance
  • DFI, commercial banking, Trade Finance, Credit Funds or other suitable background.
  • Thorough understanding of Documentary Credits, Receivables Finance (Supply Chain Finance / Reverse Factoring), Credit Trading and Financial Institutions (Bank and Non-Bank).
  • University degree educated.
  • Obtained or studying toward CFA, CITF, ACA or MBA would be

Required competencies

  • A working knowledge of trade and supply chain finance products;
  • Ability to work on multiple deals while keeping to deadlines and managing time effectively;
  • Good business communication and presentation skills;
  • Evidence of relationship building and ability to develop a network of relevant external contacts, as well as internally across different teams;
  • As a member of a small team, a flexible and “hands on” approach is a prerequisite;
  • An active interest in investing in developing countries and understanding of emerging market environments, with a willingness to travel;
  • Demonstrable alignment with CDC mandate, mission and values.

Preferred competencies

  • Analytical and research skills (including the ability to analyse FI and Corporate reports, sector data, economics and relevant political events).
  • Credit analysis skills and ability to analyse FI and corporate financial statements and make commercial assessments.
  • Financial modelling and excel skills.
  • Foreign language skills, particularly those spoken in CDC’s geographies (e.g. French, Portuguese etc.) would be an additional advantage.
