We are seeking Commercial Officers to join our procurement team supporting the vital work Dstl does for UK Defence and Security. We work in one of the most challenging and complex areas of defence, which will allow you, practice your professional skill sets, whilst undertaking great development opportunities. We need hardworking, forward thinking and enthusiastic individuals to provide operational level support to our Divisions, operating as a supervised practitioner in your area of responsibility and have delegations which include: sourcing, contract management, or sales as required.

You’ll be working alongside other Procurement professionals who will give you a rare opportunity to work at the forefront of Defence research. Who we are looking for?

For this role you should already be working in a Commercial environment (procurement, sales, IP, business development roles), building on a skillset involving procurement, contract negotiation and supplier management. You should be an effective communicator, who is comfortable working as part of a team but also able to think on your feet you’ll have the ability to get things done whilst taking personal responsibility for your work and continuous development.

You should either have achieved professional competencies through meaningful commercial experience combined with commercial qualifications or preferably be at or working towards CIPS recognition.

What you’ll be doing

As part of a team of colleagues, you will typically be working for a Commercial Manager developing procurement requirements with other Dstl staff for internal projects. You will figure out procurement strategies and support value for money tendering including negotiation with suppliers and supplier selection. You will place contracts and ensure effective supplier performance through whole life management of contracts while also providing accurate and timely commercial data.

Every single day can be varied but you’ll be a key member of our team supporting the following crucial activities:

• Advising project managers on procurement strategies for their procurements.

• Handling competitive or single source procurements and sourcing activities, including development of invitations to tender or negotiate. There include complex contracts requiring non-standard pricing conditions or bespoke terms and conditions.

• Providing contract management of higher value sensitive or complex contracts.

• Having the authority to make changes to cost and schedule for such contracts including taking enforcement steps as appropriate and leading contractor performance management assessments.

• Providing delivery and oversight of commercial sales activity

• Acting as a competent local authority on sourcing, contract management and sales within Dstl commercial function.

Sift/interview dates and location

Sifting and interviews will take place throughout August and September. Interviews will take place at either Dstl Porton Down, Salisbury or Dstl Portsdown West depending on specified location preferences.
