The Role

Business Operations plays a vital role in the success of Baillie Gifford. We’ve been described as ‘the oil in the machine’ – not seen on the outside but keeping everything within the business running smoothly. All the areas of Business Operations are interlinked, and what we do here is critical to the success of our whole business. Whether it’s liaising with clients on accounting to processing trades or analysing operational risk, we add value at every stage of the process. It’s all about connectivity. Our focus is on building a strong people network across the business, giving you the chance to meet people at every level and within every area of the business, including the partners who own the firm.

The work of the Business Operations team goes much further than just maintaining processes and systems. Our business is constantly changing, so the operations that support it must be flexible and future-focused too. We look for people with the creativity and insight to drive change and continuous improvement in everything they do. Whether it’s a simple process or a complex project, you’ll always be questioning, exploring and challenging. Is there a better way to do it? What if we tried this? Has anybody thought about that?

The graduate programme is named Business Operations, but internally, we prefer to use the term Investment Operations. We’ve made this distinction because you’ll be joining the dynamic group who support our entire investment process. You’ll gain an unrivalled view of a how a successful, industry-leading firm works and once you have that understanding, you’ll be able to find ways to make us work better.

What We're Looking For

We know that everyone’s different, which is why we take a different approach when recruiting graduates. Our application process doesn’t include online assessments or telephone interviews, only face-to-face meetings. Once you’re with us, you will join a culture that cares about you as an individual. You’ll work closely with senior employees and receive guidance from a programme manager, a year group mentor and a mentor within each placement; all to ensure you reach your full potential.

And the support goes beyond your role; we’re also incredibly committed to the wellbeing of our employees. Groups such as the LGBT network, the mental health group, as well as clubs like touch rugby and yoga play a vital part in creating a culture that we’re proud of. Life at Baillie Gifford is about working hard, not working long hours. We want you to enjoy a healthy work/life balance as you progress in your career.

We believe in treating our employees well, and that includes financially. We offer an excellent starting salary that’s competitive with other investment management firms, plus a benefits package that includes an annual bonus, generous pension, life assurance, discounted private healthcare, 34 days’ holiday and bank holidays as standard.

There are many factors that contribute to our unique culture, but none more so than one – we’re an independent business. Baillie Gifford isn’t owned by a remote multinational; it’s owned by the partners who work within the firm. So the decision makers aren’t faceless CEOs, they’re sitting across from you answering your queries. It’s this that makes us different. We’re a business where people matter. Where you’re not just a number, you’re our investment.
