CAD Technician – GIS Knowledge (Permanent)

Location: Birmingham

Project: HS2

Laing O’Rourke has a requirement for a CAD Technician to join the team working on the HS2 enabling works.

About the project:

Working for Laing O’Rourke, you will work with two of Europe’s most prominent and innovative engineering and construction companies – Laing O’Rourke and Murphy on the LM JV Project that is responsible for delivering the enabling works for High Speed Two including the essential early works of archaeology, site clearance and setting up construction compounds – ahead of the start of the main civil engineering work.

As a CAD professional your main responsibility will be the conversion of CAD data between different coordinate systems and the conversion of CAD data to formats that can be used by GIS systems. In addition, you will be expected to provide support to the wider joint venture GIS and Digital Engineering teams on GIS assurance, Navisworks model maintenance, and general CAD drafting requirements. Supporting the implementation and delivery of the project specific CAD duties. You will actively support and drive consistent implementation and continuous improvement for requirements, Working closely with our BIM, Digital Engineering teams for the best possible solutions to challenges. You will be able to put your stamp on the UK’s most exciting projects and use the latest technology and techniques, using your technical expertise to effectively manage and support internal and external professionals.

Scope of works: Production of 2D and 3D drawings

Additional activities include:

  • Converting CAD data between different coordinate systems including OSGB36, HS2 Phase 1 SnakeGrid, other SnakeGrids that interface with the HS2 project including Network Rail and the Midland Metro network
  • Converting CAD data to formats that can be used by the joint venture and HS2 GIS systems
  • Creating, maintaining and improving FME workbenches to facilitate both these processes
  • Creating CAD output as required
  • Supporting the Digital Engineering team to update and maintain federated design models within Navisworks

Knowledge and experience

CAD Skills for 2D and 3D drafting using civils 3D and AutoCAD with the ability to also interface with ProjectWise. An understanding of Navisworks would be beneficial but not essential. An understanding of GIS software such as ArcGIS or QGIS would be advantageous.
