Who is Lightyear?

Lightyear is an innovative and progressive scale-up with one mission; offering clean mobility for everyone, everywhere! Lightyear originates from the multiple world champion of the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge® Cruiser Class, Solar Team Eindhoven. With Stella and Stella Lux this team developed a solar powered, 4 person, road legal car. Lightyear was officially established in 2016 aiming to make this groundbreaking technology accessible to everyone! In 2016 it started with 5 visionaries. At the beginning of 2018 Lightyear had grown to 40 highly motivated people. Today, Lightyear consists of nearly 150 employees and keeps on growing. Lightyear has its own production facility and a new office to be delivered in the summer of 2019. This growth will continue in the coming years. For that reason we are looking for talent and experience to strengthen the company and contribute in achieving our mission!

What will you do as Power Electronics Engineer?

As a power electronics engineer you will work on state-of-the-art power electronics necessary for solar electric vehicles. Many DC/DC and DC/AC converters are needed in a vehicle and our challenge is to get tradeoffs between mass, efficiency and cost at the optimum for solar electric vehicles. The initial focus will be on developing the innovative power electronics.

  • Develop and design power converters, for example for the power conversion between solar panel and battery, or between battery and motors (until 500V)
  • Review external designs from suppliers and ensure that they can be integrated in the systems we develop in-house
  • Design for safety and reliability within automotive and in general on efficiency
  • Design to relevant automotive standards for safety and EMI (Electro Magnetic Interference)
  • Designing PCB layouts when needed (Printed Circuit board)
  • Verification of your own designs (domain wide)

You will independently design the power stage of different types of electronics. Given a set of requirements, you should be able to decide on a topology, choose or design the required components and create a schematic. When handed a piece of power electronics, you should be able to verify the design independently, knowing what and how to measure and possibly improve the design.

What do we expect from a Power Electronics Engineer at Lightyear?

To succeed in the dynamic world of Lightyear, pro-activity, professionalism, communication and adaptability are crucial. In addition, we are looking for someone with an ambitious attitude who learns from the past (tried and tested) but who is especially open to transforming new developments or ideas into the "tried and tested" of the future! You are also someone with a high sense of responsibility and a cooperative attitude. You like short lines of communication. You have good communication skills, you are a self starter with a ‘can do’ mentality. You can create and build from scratch, you are committed, punctual, quality minded, a team player, flexible, stress resilient and of course a fast learner. Furthermore you'll bring:

  • A Bachelor or Master degree in Electrical Engineering or similar
  • At least 5 years of full-time working experience in the field of Power Electronics
  • Capable of reading and understanding relevant norms, like UNECE R10, R98, R100 or IEC 60664, and apply these norms to the design
  • Experience within automotive is preferred
  • Experience with schematic tools is required, knowledge of PCB layout is a plus
  • Experience with Altium is preferred
  • Excellent knowledge of the English language in word and writing is mandatory. Dutch is preferred
  • Availability for 40 hours per week

What can you expect from Lightyear?

In addition to a challenging role as Power Electronics Engineer you also have the opportunity to work for a company with a real, honest and ambitious mission. This way you have the opportunity to make a huge impact on the future of mobility! In addition, we also offer:

  • A high degree of freedom and independence in your role
  • A role within a multidisciplinary team consisting of highly motivated, inquisitive and talented people with a broad diversity of experience
  • A role at one of the fastest growing technical companies in the Netherlands with accompanying opportunities
  • 40 vacation days a year. (based on full-time employment)
  • Excellent travel allowance that encourages the use of public transport
  • An interesting and balanced pension through Zwitserleven that is in line with the mission of Lightyear
  • The ability to participate via shares and to be involved in the growth and success of Lightyear
  • In addition to a dynamic working environment, there is time for relaxation during our already epic Friday afternoon drinks

At Lightyear we are building an electric car that charges itself. From our experience at Solar Team Eindhoven, we know this is only possible starting from scratch. At Lightyear we bring together a multidisciplinary team of highly motivated engineers, designers, and visionaries to challenge the status quo. Write the story with us!
