Semantics and semantic interoperability is considered the next glass ceiling for ICT. Help us in its breakthrough!

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?

Problem: The world is becoming more and more dependent on online collaboration and data exchange. Individual enterprises are confronted with more data, from more partners and more heterogenous sources in business networks, which are more dynamic than ever before. Getting a managed access to the data is no problem anymore. Getting the internal data systems to use that data correctly becomes an increasing problem because getting an understanding of the data precedes their use. Since computers are fundamentally incapable of understanding, humans are required to provide that last connection. This requires a huge effort in terms of semantic standardization, schema mappings, and data wrapper development, a strategy that is doomed to fail.

Solution: The objective is to provide software with an access-and-play capability. Open Interoperability will be based upon ontologies, alignments, mediators and semantic protocols, viz. a standardized solution pattern that can become embedded in a technological infrastructure. Interoperability then becomes a transparent service, even at the semantic level.

Method: We have developed an approach based on formal semantics towards semantic interoperability. Particularly the mediator part is currently in demand of a generic transcription component based on Term Rewriting Systems, ontology alignment specifications, formal semantics and logic rules. The purpose of the mediator is to translate data between peer ontologies such that the variations and inconsistencies between them will not lead to transcription-induced phantom semantics and subsequent application failures.

WHAT DO WE REQUIRE OF YOU?

  • We seek (student) software engineers who are interested in AI and ontology engineering, or (student) AI specialists who are experienced in software engineering.
  • Your level of expertise is at least Bachelor grade.
  • Your collaboration and social skills are beyond doubt, as is your capability to judge for yourself and work independently.
  • Either master end project candidates, or students interested in doing a work placement or apprenticeship, or similar, are invited to apply.
  • Work experience is not required, but can come in handy.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT OF YOUR WORK SITUATION?
