WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?

ECN.TNO has developed a software called ECN Despatch to optimise the planning of daily O&M activities. With the open work orders (what type of work on which wind turbine component, for how many man-hours), resource available (e.g. vessels, technicians) and weather forecast as inputs, the software generates the optimal transfer plans (the time of each work being performed, as well as the vessel and technicians employed for the work) based on the optimisation target (e.g. minimizing energy loss).

In some wind farms, the straight line path between wind turbines (or the port and wind farm) is not always the optimal route. There is a balance to be had between speed, fuel consumption and seasickness (which are all affected by wind, waves and currents). Additionally, in intertidal wind farms, some parts may be too shallow to enter at certain times of day.

To make simulations of maintenance activities more realistic, an algorithm is needed which can work out a high-quality feasible route between two locations, based on the changing weather during that route.

There are algorithms such as A* (ieeexplore.ieee.org/document.., dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?doid..) and jump point search (harablog.wordpress.com/2011/..) that work well on static and uniform-cost grids, but dynamic costs and constraints are more interesting and challenging.

WHAT DO WE REQUIRE OF YOU?

Internship / Graduation project task:

1. Literature survey on search and optimisation algorithms for static and dynamic pathing

2. Research & design an algorithm that is effective and efficient at solving this problem

3. If desired, prototype code in any language of choice (e.g. C#, C++, Python, MATLAB) to demonstrate its effectiveness.

4. If appropriate, work with academic and industrial supervisors to publish any new developments.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT OF YOUR WORK SITUATION?

TNO, ECN Part of TNO, Wind Energy Group

Supervision:

Clym Stock-Williams (Researcher/Consultant in Installation, O&M Offshore Wind Farms). Background physics and data science. Has been working for ECN/TNO for 3 years.

Time frame:

Start as soon as possible, for 4 - 9 months.
