Job description

The post is based in the National Infection Service Clinical Services Unit. The work of microbiology reference laboratories includes clinical microbiological advice and diagnosis, complex reference, service delivery, methodology development, microbial epidemiology, investigation of national and uncommon outbreaks, response to international health alerts, and advice on the risks posed by various infections. Clinical samples and isolates are received from public health departments, the National Health Service and commercial laboratories across the UK and internationally for specialist testing, characterisation and susceptibility testing.

Responsibilities

The post holder will be part of a team, within the Clinical Services Unit, which delivers technical and related services which meet the clinical and scientific requirements of the Unit and comply with the best laboratory practices and are safe, economical and effective. The post holder will have practical experience of both manual and automated serological and molecular techniques. Previous experience in a pathology laboratory will be an advantage

Through the Defence and Security Accelerator, we fund research into novel, high-risk, high-potential-benefit innovations. The Accelerator focuses on innovations which can provide advantage to defence and national security to protect the UK from its adversaries. It funds the development of suppliers’ innovative ideas and provides support through to potential application.
