What is Security Engineering?

BuroHappold’s Security and Technology group provide a wide range of services to clients in order to develop the built environment. We typically support our clients by consulting on security strategy development, physical security, technology strategy development and engineering of digital technologies into the building and surrounding environment. In addition we provide advice in solution procurement and implementation during and beyond construction programmes.

Our traditional areas of expertise lie in security systems (access control, intruder detection, CCTV), IT infrastructures, Audio Visual systems and building management solutions. However, we advocate a holistic approach to technology and provide services in many technology niches, such as smart home technologies, asset tracking and protection, automation, use of drones, advanced multimedia – any digital technology that might be applied within the built environment.

We are currently recruiting for a Security Systems Graduate vacancy to join us in our Bath Office, in our 2019 intake. To provide effective security design, this role will require detailed coordination with related disciplines such as Fire, IT, Electrical, Architecture and numerous other parties. The successful candidate will work closely with both internal and external design teams to influence the design approach and ensure the final design functions to allow buildings to maximise not only security, but also ease of use, automation and consistency in operation.

Our Bath team’s project work spans multiple sectors (education, cultural, stadia, commercial, airports), supporting clients and design teams across the world.

We’re also active in research and development, in areas that improve our approach to design within the built environment (e.g. building information modelling), and in keeping abreast of the latest emerging technologies and their potential for our clients.

Our committed investment in developing our people has enabled us to deliver these services on a number of prestigious local and international projects.

What sort of projects would I work on?

The International Quarter (Tiq), London

Located in the south east corner of the London 2012 Olympic site, TIQ Residential occupies a prime position within the masterplan for the regeneration of the area holding a project value of around £70million. The BuroHappold Engineering team has been appointed to work on two new buildings in this development, comprising 30 and 18 storeys respectively. These will house ultra-efficient residential accommodation that provides high level, sustainable urban living designed to meet both current and future needs of the growing local community.

Elephant Park, London

Located in London’s Elephant and Castle, this project features a new high-end residential development and the largest park created in the city for 70 years. The development will create almost 3,000 new homes on the site of the former Heygate estate, as well as the new public realm that will provide open, green space for residents and visitors. This verdant new residential quarter is redefining 21st century city living.
