WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?

More than 60% of the petrochemical sites in North West Europe are at the risk of closure due to competition from bigger refineries elsewhere and their dilemma to expand using fossil based technologies. This uncertainty puts at risks the future of the petrochemical industry in the Netherlands which has an annual turnover of 53 billion euro (VNCI, 2012). The different technological pathways to reduce the fossil dependence includes use of renewable electricity, capture and utilization of CO2, H2 economy, bio-based conversion, circularity and enhanced process efficiency. Lowering of environmental impact should be reached while maximization the use of current assets and considering the fluctuations in the business, market and political scenarios. In such competing circumstances, it is complex to make a definite choice of technology and scenarios to reach a desired level of environmental impact. At TNO, we have developed a tool for comparison of competing technologies and scenarios to assist the industry in making the right choices for future.

Your challenge will be to develop this tool further and build, test and compare different techno-economic scenarios with market dynamics. And to determine the conditions for successful implementation of these technologies (and combinations thereof) for reaching the desired reduction of the environmental impact.

WHAT DO WE REQUIRE OF YOU?

  • Background in computer programming is essential. Basics of chemical engineering would be useful.
  • Interest in technologies, scenarios and market dynamics.
  • The ideal duration of the project is 9 months, smaller projects of 3 to 6 months are also possible.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT OF YOUR WORK SITUATION?

You will be working in Sustainable Process and Energy Department, which focuses on energy storage, gas treatment, process development for bio-based chemistry and electrochemistry. Your project will involve consulting across boundaries between different sectors of energy, process engineering, information-technology and economics.
