Work on nano-instrumentation and contamination control for the semiconductor industry. Challenging assignments, potentially working in cleanrooms, with vacuum, plasma, EUV light, metrology tools, and simulations.

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?

For over a decade, the department of Nano-Instrumentation has provided applied physics solutions for the semiconductor equipment industry, but also for space and nuclear fusion. One of the major activities is the development of equipment for 'Next Generation Lithography' machines like wafer steppers and scanners. Mostly, we deliver products, prototypes and designs.

This includes the design and realization of systems and sensors with nanometer mechanical stability and with strong requirements in view of environmental conditions (vacuum, radiation, molecular and particle contamination). One of the specialisms of our group is contamination control, the prevention of contamination, for instance by particles, when constructing chips or during other processes. Part of contamination control is the design of products, and choosing the right materials; the nano-insturmentation group operates extensive testing facilities that recreate relevant semicon environments. Another aspect is measurement of contamination, and mitigation, for instance by cleaning. Assisting in all these processes, molecular and particle contamination of surfaces is investigated using flow and thermal modelling (e.g. Computational Fluid Dynamics ‘CFD’ ), as well as plasma modelling.

WHAT DO WE REQUIRE OF YOU?

The preferred duration of an internship is 6 months or longer. The exact nature of the assignment will be determined in consultation with the student. We are looking for good students in the hard sciences who are interested in an internship in which they can work on useful applications for industry on the edge of what is scientifically possible.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT OF YOUR WORK SITUATION?

TNO is an independent research organisation whose expertise and research make an important contribution to the competitiveness of companies and organisations, to the economy and to the quality of society as a whole. Innovation with purpose is what TNO stands for. With 3500 people we develop knowledge not for its own sake but for practical application. To create new products that make life more pleasant and valuable and help companies innovate. To find creative answers to the questions posed by society. We work for a variety of customers: governments, the SME sector, large companies, service providers and non-governmental organisations. Working together on new knowledge, better products and clear recommendations for policy and processes. In everything we do, impact is the key. Our product and process innovations and recommendations are only worth something if our customers can use them to boost their competitiveness.

WHAT CAN TNO OFFER YOU?

You want to work on the precursor of your career; a work placement gives you an opportunity to take a good look at your prospective future employer. TNO goes a step further. It’s not just looking that interests us; you and your knowledge are essential to our innovation. That’s why we attach a great deal of value to your personal and professional development. You will, of course, be properly supervised during your work placement and be given the scope for you to get the best out of yourself. Naturally, we provide suitable work placement compensation.
