Monday morning. You enter our beautiful canal office at the Herengracht and walk past the pingpong table to the coffee machine. Time for a cup of coffee. While you’re waiting for your coffee, you already hear your colleagues’ plans on how to push Virtuagym, the leading health & fitness solution on the planet, to the next level.
As a Systems Engineer you work with us on the design and development of the most advanced health & fitness system on this planet, challenging people to live more healthy and active lives through exercise and good nutrition. The Virtuagym system comprises a web-based platform, integrated mobile apps and health sensors and is used internationally by consumers, personal trainers, health clubs and corporate health services. Your tasks will include a.o. guiding the deployment and the management of our VPS environment.
The week has flown by. Friday, 16:30. The cold beers are waiting to be opened, music is turned on and snacks appear on the tables. We’re one step closer to world domination, and that’s something to celebrate every week. You leave our building with pride. Who would have thought that you could contribute this much to the growth of an ambitious organization and that work could be so much fun?
Anyway, back to the beginning. Let’s introduce ourselves:
Virtuagym is a fast growing company located in the center of Amsterdam. We provide innovative business software for gyms, personal trainers, physiotherapists and corporate health services. With our tools for client coaching, management and integrated mobile apps, Virtuagym is a leading player in the fitness industry. Backed by investors SanomaVentures and Saffelberg Investments, our goal is to turn Virtuagym into the worldwide leading player in health and fitness software. To help make that happen, we’re looking for a Systems Engineer to join our team.
Good knowledge of Linux: Our product environment is based on Linux, so we expect that you can easily find your own way. Of course you have experience with NGINX, PHP-FPM and NFS. Practical experience with Fedora is a plus, but experience with other modern distributions is fine as well.
Experience with management of a VPS environment All of our VPSes are hosted by Linode. They arrange the hardware themselves, but on the OS level we handle things ourselves. Installing updates and patches must not scare you.
Experience with monitoring a product environment You are working with Munin to keep track of our servers.
Experience with MariaDB We use MariaDB 10. The amount of users that we have keeps on growing. So the database has to be checked from time to time to see if the performance is still acceptable – tuning is a repetitive activity. You don’t have to be a hard-core DBA, but good basics in SQL is a must. Experience with other databases is a plus.
Guiding deployment We are a DevOps-club. This means that deployment is done by our own development club. We have our own methods for that, but are always open to other deployment systems. We are also open to improve our internal processes, so your own input is highly valued.
What We Bring to the Table
A challenging full-time position (40 hours) within a young, fast-growing and international company operating from a beautiful office in the heart of town. Despite our recent growth we still have (and cherish!) our “non-corporate start-up culture”, where plain fun, great atmosphere and building cool new stuff is what it’s all about. You get the chance to build the most awesome things using the latest technologies, which are used by millions of people worldwide, thus helping us innovate the health & fitness industry. You will get as much responsibility as you’re willing to take on, allowing you to grow as a professional within our company.
