Optimising transport and storage of steel slabs between Oxygen Steel plant and the Hot Strip mill based on slab temperature

What's your job?

For this thesis a numerical model will be the developed that calculates the heat content of a large (3000+) number of steel slabs as a function of time and a large number of varying circumstances.

At Tata Steel IJmuiden a steel slab weighs 12-38 ton. The slabs are cast at approx. 1450°C in the Oxygen Steel plant and subsequently rolled and coiled at the Hot Strip mill. In between the two plants, the slabs are transported by train and stored in partially roofed warehouses. From there the slabs are put in front of the Hot Strip mill in the desired sequence. Due to this sorting operation, the slabs are moved around several times. The slabs are stacked on top of each other and cool down unfortunately, the ones on top more than those at the bottom of the stack. The heat lost during storage needs the be applied in furnaces just prior to hot rolling as this takes place with a slab temperature of approx. 1200°C.

Tata Steel wants to use this model to gain insight in the heat losses between casting and hot rolling at the level of the individual slabs and to increase the temperature with which the slabs are charged in the furnaces. To assess the value of a reliable/validated heat content model, a first exploration of the problem has been performed and there are ideas in which direction the solution can be sought. The longer term goal is to develop a real-time version of the model, this however is beyond the scope of this assignment.

The duration of this internship placement is nine months.

Is this you?

The right candidate will have:

  • an almost completed technical master, preferably Applied Physics or Mathematics
  • affinity with heavy industry / manufacturing processes
  • interest in process improvement and energy saving
  • broad experience with programming complex problems in Matlab / Python
  • extensive experience in making numerical thermal models
  • strong analytical and communication skills

What's your department?

The department ‘Customer Value’ is part of ‘Technical MLE’ and responsible for identifying and executing special projects / activities to enable the various plants to achieve their growth targets.

Technical MLE is among other things responsible for the active management of the product portfolio, the development of new products and the extension of existing products of MLE. Technical is also responsible for the product quality along the (internal) supply chain and executes product quality and cost reduction projects when there are explicit issues pertaining to the production route via the various plants.
