As a Graduation student: Workforce scheduling algorithm improvements at ORTEC you will be part of a unique organization and team!

What you do

As a graduation student, you get the opportunity to analyze, improve and develop optimization algorithms in one of world’s leading workforce scheduling solutions: ORTEC Workforce Scheduling. At ORTEC, we continuously strive to improve our optimization algorithms. The goal? Find better solutions in shorter times, thereby better serving our customers to find high-quality schedules.

Recently, in order to internationally benchmark and to compare ourselves with the latest (academic) state-of-the-art, ORTEC competed in an international workforce scheduling competition (see mobiz.vives.be/inrc2). And, as a consequence, we have implemented new and improved algorithms. Now we want more! There are many public workforce scheduling benchmark instances available on which we want to test our algorithms, compare ourselves with state-of-the-art and improve our algorithms. Therefore, your assignment will be:

• Benchmark (baseline measurement) on public and also real-life test instances

• Analyze strengths and improvement potential of our current algorithms

• Suggest and implement improvements and/or develop new algorithms

• Perform a structured results analysis and draw conclusions from this

Of course, we have some ideas of our own for improvement directions. One particular promising direction is to look into constraint pre-processing. Currently, over 100 different (practical) constraint types can be defined in ORTEC Workforce Scheduling in order to cope with a wide range of practice constraints. Think for example of constraints implied by labor legislation, union rules, skills, absences, and employee and organizational preferences. Grouping or eliminating redundant constraints may make the mathematical model smaller, more clear and hopefully easier to solve.

Now is your opportunity to contribute to the ORTEC Workforce Scheduling software solution, from which daily hundreds of thousands of employees and hundreds of customers benefit.

Who you are

• You are a master student at an Operations Research or Computer Science study and looking for a graduation project

• You have extensive knowledge about combinatorial optimization problems and its solution methods, both exact and heuristic

• You have at least basic programming skills in Java, C++, or Delphi, preferably experienced in Delphi

What we offer

• A pleasant, open, informal atmosphere

• Early responsibility

• Inspiring, smart and enthusiastic colleagues

• Ample opportunities to develop yourself (internationally)

• Excellent pay and conditions

• Active employee association

What to expect

We help you to thrive in your field of expertise. We offer development programs, tailored to your individual needs and function requirements, including opportunities to attend courses and seminars. We offer challenging practical hands-on experience with opportunities to work abroad. We operate a flat organizational structure that keeps communication lines short.
