What makes JTI a very special place to work?
We don't believe there is one single reason why people join us - there are many and here are the nine strongest

1. The opportunities are there to be seized JTI is a global business with markets in 120 countries worldwide, but we were only formed in 1999. We're big enough to offer you a wide range of learning and development opportunities, while our young culture will give you the freedom to determine your own path. JTI employees can shape their own futures, and in 2010 15% of our employees changed their roles.

2. We're a company that you can grow with JTI is an established business that is still growing - we are the fastest-growing company in our industry over the past decade. We firmly believe that as we grow so can our people, personally and professionally, both in their present role and as their career evolves. We are pursuing the principle of 'promotion from within'. As a result, in 2010, 83% of management-level positions were filled internally.

3. Opportunities in your location JTI has offices and factories around the world, and we're close to the communities where we operate. Whatever your role and wherever you work, you'll have access to the international practices and diverse experiences of people from a truly global business. Your career progression will also be enhanced by outstanding local training, learning and development opportunities. At locations across the world, we took on 1332 new recruits in 2010.

4. Opportunities for the internationally mobile Bringing together 25,000 people, representing 90 nationalities, in 63 countries, JTI is an international business in which no one nationality takes precedence. Our diversity is one of our core strengths, and you could follow in the footsteps of many employees who have taken advantage of the chance to meet people of different cultures and nationalities and develop a career with an international dimension. International assignments have doubled in number in the last five years.

5. New ideas are welcomed and embraced Our diversity is reflected in our breadth of thinking. We value enterprising minds. New ideas can come from anyone - anywhere - and everyone is encouraged to innovate and try new things. We run a Global Employee Engagement Survey to elicit the opinions of all our people on a regular basis. Every employee at JTI is encouraged to come up with improvement recommendations. For example, on average, each factory employee makes three recommendations per year.

6. Everyday offers a fresh challenge Excellence is the benchmark for everything we do. So we constantly challenge ourselves and each other to do our jobs better and improve our processes. We ask searching questions and we learn something new every day. Kaizen, the philosophy of continuous improvement, is implemented in all our production sites worldwide.

7. Training will help you realise your full potential All our employees are expected to drive their own development. On our part, we encourage all our managers to provide the resources and direction to help their team members realise their full potential. Ongoing coaching and on-the-job training - provided by your line manager and facilitated by our HR team - will help you to broaden your skills, both in your first job and as you progress along a flexible career path. Personal development is one of our main targets. We take it very seriously, which is why development objectives are an integral part of the JTI performance management system. Together with line managers, employees set their development objectives at the beginning of the year, work on them during the year and measure success at the end.

8. We meet the aspirations of high flyers Our MORE fast-track program is designed to propel fully internationally mobile, high-potential graduates and early career professionals into management and leadership positions within JTI. Over two years, you'll experience three eight-month assignments - one in your home market, one at our Geneva HQ and one in a market that contrasts with your home country. Exposure to multiple markets, different brands and international colleagues will equip you with the management skills to progress through the ranks. A significant number of our MORE participants have reached director-level positions within three years of completing the program.

9. We're a company that inspires loyalty We look after our people's long-term interests and they look after ours. We listen to our employees, act responsibly and keep our promises. We reward our employees' efforts and invest in their further development. In return, people treat their jobs as their own business and are proud to be part of JTI. In a recent Employee Engagement Survey, 94% of JTI employees agreed that they are 'willing to put in a great deal of effort beyond what is normally expected to help my company succeed'. No wonder our staff turnover in 2010 was so low, at only around 11%.

Diversity of experience, opinions and nationalities are characteristics of JTI that have been there since we were formed. Today we bring together people from 60 countries around the world - with no one country dominating - and actively seek to realize the benefits diversity can bring. Cross-functional teams, a mix of nationalities and a collaborative approach to projects, have created an environment where everyone is encouraged to share their different experiences and opinions.

We know from company experience that this kind knowledge-sharing develops our people and produces fresh perspectives that can have a major impact on our success. With expanded horizons our employees grow and our company grows too.

Positive outcomes
Nurturing diversity encourages employees to see things in new ways. It ensures they develop more subtle insights into different cultures and can transfer that knowledge to comparative markets. It gives them exposure to different viewpoints, meaning they are better prepared to engage with a wider range of stakeholders.

It improves the quality of their decision-making, since knowledge of different challenges and ways of tackling them, produces more rounded appreciation of what the consequences of decisions will be. Most of all, for our business it means we have an extensive mix of ideas and influences to draw upon, ensuring valuable innovation and continuous improvements in all that we do. Opportunities for employees.

The way JTI embraces diversity has significant benefits for employees pursuing both local and international careers. Everyone has access to cutting edge international practices and opportunities to collaborate with people from diverse backgrounds, therefore broadening their knowledge and developing personally.

Diversity is as much about the range of career opportunities offered within one country as the chance to develop an international career that involves living and working in multiple countries. Flexible working schedules that take into account the cultural differences of each location we operate in and a focus on promoting talent from within, mean that diverse work experience is available without changing country. But for those with the ambition and flexibility to move, it can be a life-changing experience.
Like the South African HR manager who moved from Tanzania to Moscow to Hong Kong via our headquarters in Geneva, and the factory manager who began her career in Turkey and reached Sweden via Japan and Geneva. The national borders that inhibit movement within some companies have been broken down at JTI. The predominant factor influencing the extent of an international career within our business is professional capability. International to the top An international career can take you to the very top of JTI's business. Today, on our Executive Committee, there are 17 people of 12 different nationalities many of whom have built their careers working across a large range of markets. Of our 49 General Managers around the world, 35 are non-nationals of the markets they serve and between them they carry passports of 21 different nationalities.

Supporting diverse careers
We support diverse careers through a number of key programs. They are targeted at talented employees from within the business and quality graduates who are new to our business. Short Term Assignments are one route JTI employees have to living and working in another country.
Roles are advertised internally that need filling on a short-term basis and employees are chosen based on their ability to fulfill the role, regardless of their nationality.
We ask whether the employee would gain from the experience and if our company would benefit from the transfer of their particular expertise to the role and location in question. MORE is a program that focuses on fully-mobile early-career professionals and graduates that are looking for accelerated career progression. The scheme incorporates three, eight-month assignments for graduates. The first is in the graduate's native market, the second in JTI's headquarters in Geneva and the third in a market that contrasts with the employee's home country.

Local career paths
We invest in the careers of our employees who are content with a single location. It's important we have a strong set of talented local people working for us as they sustain and build our local market knowledge and expertise. The benefits of working for an international company such as a diverse range of tasks and projects, enterprising approaches, career opportunities and stable employment are apparent in each of JTI's locations. This means that employees have access to the benefits of an international environment even when they choose to stay in their home country. Cross-functional learning We offer a diverse range of careers at JTI, whether employees are focused on a particular specialism or motivated by experiencing a range of our business functions. However it benefits all of our employees to gain as broad knowledge of the business as possible, which is why we've developed cross-functional training initiatives. One example is our Finance for Non-Finance training program which helps everyone to understand the numbers that matter most to our business. Exposure to the activities and purpose of our different functions creates an empathy and understanding across the business and forges a commitment to working better together.

JTI recognizes that motivating and enabling its employees to achieve great things is a continuous process of engagement At JTI, we strive to create an environment where the goals and needs of the business are supported by investment in people's growth, training and development, exciting career opportunities and appropriate reward for its people. Run on a regular basis, the survey is used to gather the opinions of all JTI people.

Every employee is encouraged to share opinions and bring improvement to all areas of the business. At the center of this thinking is an ambitious human resources strategy that has been continually evolving for more than ten years. Some of the obvious benefits to JTI as an employer include the company's exceptionally low employee turnover compared to similar companies. Harder to quantify are the deeper insights into what produces employee engagement. Getting employee feedback To aid understanding, JTI has introduced a global Employee Engagement Survey. Its purpose is to give management teams more detailed knowledge of what the company is doing well, and less well, in the minds of employees, enabling meaningful improvements. Survey response rates The Employee Engagement Survey was first carried out in JTI's CIS+ region, which includes countries that span from the Balkans to Mongolia. It had an extremely high response rate, with 88% of employees responding to the survey.

When JTI's survey was extended to the entire organization, the response rate rose at to 90%. To put that in perspective, a typical high-performing company's response rate is 80%. What the survey revealed JTI employees are highly engaged with the business. When asked about their willingness to put in significant effort beyond what is normally expected to help the company succeed, 94% of them confirmed they were willing to do so. This is 2% higher than the benchmark response for high-performing companies. The survey also addressed the areas of reward, recognition and working conditions. Globally across the business, employees believe JTI recognizes their contribution with appropriate rewards.
But one of the clearest signs of engagement at JTI is that the great majority of employees said they would recommend JTI to a friend as a good place to work. Action plans Every employee survey conducted by JTI generates action plans for the business. The plans are built by collecting results globally and analyzed them locally to develop local action plans.

If common themes and actions emerge in the local plans these are incorporated into global action plans for JTI as a whole. The action plans integrate the opinions shared through the Employee Engagement Survey into the company's business plans.
