Cargill is a global leader in the supply of premium cocoa and chocolate products. We run an integrated supply chain from sourcing cocoa beans in producing countries like Ivory Coast, Brazil or Indonesia to selling high quality cocoa and chocolate products to food manufacturers worldwide. We have production facilities in Europe, West Africa, Asia, North America and South America.

The Strategy & Supply and Demand Analysis department is responsible among others for providing proprietary fundamental analyses of the cocoa markets, primarily for the business own commercial decisions. The analysis of the cocoa supply fundamentals is based on collecting, interpreting and providing insights on primary data of crop conditions and trends in all the major cocoa producing countries with support of dedicated local teams. In this context, the role of the Junior Crop Analyst is to support in estimating the volume and timing of the cocoa crops, and monitor stocks development and reconciliations.

Major Tasks

  • Perform analyses of pod count data and support in crop forecasting. Continuously monitor and analyse all relevant information/data for crop estimates (weather, arrivals, trade flows, stocks, others), and provide insights
  • Build and maintain comprehensive quarterly crop/stocks reconciliation models
  • Ensure all data is adequately stored in the SAS database.
  • Perform regular consistency checks to ensure that field teams are making correct observations and feedback to field manager in origin for his action/follow-up.
  • Support in the weekly pod count reports and participate in writing weekly Supply and Demand report for internal stakeholders.
  • Prepare presentations for weekly global SND review Occasional field trips.
  • Engage with field teams at appropriate level and in coordination with local senior staff, so that they are able to contribute more research insights
  • Support on evaluating the pod count sample representativeness on annual basis and the corresponding crop modelling tools to ensure alignment and ultimately improve forecast accuracy
  • Support team in other analyses as requested

Challenges:

  • Ability to deal with complexity and uncertainty due to partial/conflicting data
  • Challenge anecdotal evidence with logic and facts

Qualifications

  • Master degree in Agribusiness, Agricultural Economics or Agriculture. Economics or related studies with relevant experience and curiosity to learn might be considered
  • Maximum of two years relevant work experience
  • Experience in analyzing data and forecasting
  • Experience in agriculture sectorInterest in commodity markets and trading

Skills:

  • Excellent analytical and quantitative skills
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Critical thinking and ability to synthetize ideas; translate findings to business relevance
  • Excellent skills in MS Excel, database management; programming skills (VBA, SAS,SQL) are an advantage
  • Language proficiency (written and verbal) in English; good knowledge of French is a plus

Required competencies:

  • Continuous improvement attitude and always thinking in building for long term team capabilities
  • Positive attitude and eager to learn
  • Ready to handle a sometimes hectic working environment and to be challenged

  • Willing to travel occasionally and participate in crop trips to remote locations

Preferred experience and skills:

  • Experience in African region / Tropical region
  • Experience in analyzing weather data and/or remote sensing
  • Knowledge of financial futures market
  • Experience in Cocoa or other tropical tree crop (Palm, Rubber, Coffee)
