Mechanical engineering is huge and covers a massive range of complex mechanical systems and intricate infrastructure. Through a great mix of placements over the course of two to four years, you’ll experience the awe-inspiring, the challenging, and maybe even the impossible. And find out how we make it possible all the same.

WHERE YOU CAN JOIN US

You can find out more about the areas of our business offering places on the Mechanical Engineering programme for autumn 2017 on our website. But no matter which team you join, you could be based anywhere in the UK. That’s why we ask all our graduates to be flexible and willing to move during their programme.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

You’ll really get a taste of the epic breadth of our work. You could be tackling complex submarine design projects or warship refits, working in renewable energy, on oil and gas projects, rail network renewal, or on nuclear new-build programmes. Whatever it is, it’ll be big.

The range of potential mechanical engineering activities you could be involved with are vast. You could work in mechanical design – producing drawings and working with manufacturers, suppliers and subcontractors right through to manufacture, installation and decommissioning. Or you could work on analysis and problem solving for existing equipment or systems. Expect plenty of onsite work – implementing designs, finding solutions to installation issues, liaising with designers and office based engineers and coordinating staff or contractors. And project management – liaising with customers and suppliers, planning for successful project implementation and ensuring projects run to budget and programme.

WHAT YOU’LL GET OUT OF IT

You’ll get a proper overview of what we do, which will help you figure out what you love and what you’re good at. We’ll also support you every step of the way on your path to becoming an Incorporated or Chartered Engineer – with a competitive starting salary of £27,000 - £30,000 as you’re doing it. And after the programme, you’ll be in pole position for lots of roles throughout Babcock.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

A 2:2 BEng (Hons) degree is vital. And because the programme is accredited by the IMechE, IET, RINA, IChemE and IMarEST, your degree will need to be accredited by one of those institutions too. You’ll also need to satisfy the MOD’s security requirements (and may need to complete a medical assessment).

Applications for this programme are currently open. To avoid disappointment we recommend that you apply sooner rather than later as we work on a rolling basis and where we experience large volumes of applications, we will close the role early.
