Materials science supports the life cycle of warhead components and technologies to ensure reliability of the UK's strategic deterrent. A nuclear warhead contains a vast range of materials including metals, ceramics, inorganic salts, rubbers, foams, adhesives, high explosives and radioactive substances. Many of these materials have unique handling issues and our dedicated facilities ensure a safe and secure environment to undertake research. Materials science is critical to understanding and predicting behaviour of these types of materials under various conditions.

We are looking for Year in Industry students to complete projects in our Materials Science team who are studying towards a degree in physics, chemistry, and mathematics or similar and a particular interest, or specialism, in the areas of:

  • Materials Assessment
  • Measurement Science
  • Metallurgical Science
  • Radiation Protection
  • Tritium Technology
  • Explosives Science

The Year in Industry Placement Scheme will start in Summer 2018 and all applicants must be available to start in July 2018. If you are able to start sooner please include this on your applications. All applicants must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the relevant security clearance required.
