This term used for the design of the safety systems that are required on the installation. It includes Mitigation Systems, such as Firewater Systems (which are sometimes termed ‘Loss Control’ Systems); as well as activities such as Hazardous Area Classification; preparation of escape route drawings; dispersion analysis; and waste management. Once it has been decided which systems are required on a facility, then the engineering of these facilities must be carried out, and must be included in the Safety Design Plan.

Safety assessment

This is sometimes termed ‘Formal Safety Assessment’ (FSA), and includes all safety or risk assessment activities: qualitative studies, such as HAZID and HAZOP; consequence modelling studies, such as gas dispersion and fire modelling; and Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA).

The common aim of all these studies is to improve the design of the safety systems by obtaining a better understanding of the hazardous event and the associated risk.
